Read My Blog Because I'm Black

on 6:38 PM

Sounds pretty silly, huh? I mean there are lots of reasons that you could read my blog...but I'd just like you to read it because I'm black. That's a good enough reason, right? Well if you think that's ridiculous....read on....

Today I heard on WMBI that Farrakhan met with some local ministers regarding the upcoming Cook County Board President election. Apparently these ministers feel that there are too many black folk running in the election and it would split the black vote. This would be terrible because it could mean that blacks could potentially loose a seat that we've occupied for the last 16 years and also cause other black folk to loose seats in other government posts. What these ministers seem to assume is that black folks will only vote for someone that is black. That also assumes that a black person is the only person with the wisdom we need to solve hard issues - that a black person is the best person for the job because they are black. Really?? In 2009 this is happening?? The sad thing is that there is a bit of truth to that assumption - we experienced that in the last election. I personally had conversations with people who voted for President Obama just because he is black. They had no clue about where he stood on issues important to them. He is black and that was enough for their vote.

Ok, ok...let me put myself out there and say a part of me DOES feel some pride when I hear about a black person that has had success - especially in an area where we are traditionally underrepresented. But let me also say that I SIN and I am in need of constant grace and mercy from God. Thank God for His son Jesus who came, died, and rose so that I could be forgiven for those prideful feelings. I mean, I know in my head that I shouldn't vote for someone just because they are black so I do as much homework as I can to figure out where a person stands on issues important to me before I give them my vote. But I seem to be a minority in that respect. What happened to judging someone based on the "content of their character"? And Jesus tells us that we will know people "by their fruit".

I tell you what though...let a group of white people get together and PUBLICLY make comments like those quoted in this Chicago Tribune article and it would be on!! I mean full blown marching and protesting would begin. Where is the Rainbow PUSH Coalition to protest this injustice??? Why isn't Al Sharpton calling for someone to be fired? I know there was/are certain injustices towards us but that does not give us the right to reverse RACISM. Racism is wrong period. I especially expect better from Christian ministers. Seems to me like their race trumps their faith. Our allegiance should be to God alone - participating in something like this shows they are not honoring God's command to "love thy neighbor". There was no clause to excuse them from loving someone of another race.

In the presidential election we heard a lot about "change". What I don't understand about my people (especially in urban areas), is why....WHY...do they keep voting in the same people who haven't made our communities any better. Please someone clue me in. Think about this: if you think the public schools are horrible, the CTA sucks, there's too much crime, no economic improvement in your community AND you have had the same Mayor/Alderman/County Board President (or his son)/State Rep/Senator/County Commissioner for as long as you can remember....could it be time for a change???

So for the next round of elections in Illinois here are some suggestions for affecting change in your community:

  • Make a list of the things you would like to see changed/improved in your area and things that are important to you. Here are some examples from my list: (1) Godly leadership - is the person a Christian? (2) Economic Development - are there businesses bringing jobs and tax dollars to my community? Is local business ownership encouraged? (3) Increased home values - this affects funding for schools.
  • Find out who is running for election (or re-election). You can visit www.voterinfonet.com when the election cycle gets closer to generate a custom voter guide with candidate information.
  • Do research on ALL candidates! Visit their websites, attend town hall meetings, or whatever you can to find out all about them. Don't just take what's said in the news or on TV...find out for yourself! And don't limit yourself to a particular party or (eeek) race!! Take out that list from the first bullet and see how each candidate measures up. Don't just find out what they plan to do if elected....find out how they plan to do it. Also, past performance should have an impact on whether or not you give the candidate your vote. If they've been in office for the last 16 years and you haven't seen any improvement...GIVE THEM THE BOOT!!
Your vote is a very valuable tool! Use it wisely. Don't just be another number in the voting "bloc". Have your own voice so that you can affect the kind of change you want.

Blessings

What's Expected from a "Friend"?

on 12:11 PM

friends

This actually comes from a comment that was left on one of my other posts, but I thought that it was deserving of it's on space on Everyday Flavor. I kind of think a comment or two of it's own are sure to follow. My thoughts on the matter, hmmmm...

So everyday flavor...dope blog on business/service. Saints/World please take note. This week I was faced with a couple of situations. After reading "Thought you were Home...." I figured I'd throw it to Everyday Flavor and see what you had to say.

Situation:
What if you have a friend, let's say a close friend who is in business for themselves. You recognize that they may be knowledgable in some respects and have even utilized their services, or accepted their invitations to events to show support. They love what they do and believe it is their road to success. After some time however you start thinking "this" is really not their thing. You recognize that they've been in this for a few years and that they may be wasting their time because in essence they suck at "this" (or .... their delivery in it is subpar). The world that we live in now is full of dream chasers...follow your passion, love, dream folks. I get it. You don't want to dis them, or cut off the friendship, but everytime you see them you want to yell "GIVE IT UP! DO SOMETHING ELSE! YOU'RE WASTING YOUR TIME!"

You're not a hater, nor are you judging them....you're a friend and ....honestly they are not as good at the "thing" in the dream that they are chasing?

What do you do?

Dare to Expect Holiness in Your Kids!

on 8:14 PM

So the other day Jerrold and I had a situation with our daughter. Some kids from her school (a private Christian school) set up a social network and we found out that she had an account. Needless to say, some of the content that was posted was not appropriate for kids.

We dealt with this situation, but I really have a burden on my heart because I am frustrated with the issue of kids in the church acting one way in front of adults, but on the inside they really do not have a heart for God. Most people will say that kids will just be kids...but I don't think it is unreasonable to have higher expectations for kids to walk in holiness - especially if they are being brought up in the church. Don't get me wrong, I know that kids will make mistakes or bad choices at times - and that's where we as parents come in to correct them like we had to do with our daughter and the social network. She knew that the decision to create an account without permission was wrong, but she decided to do it anyway. So I had to have a discussion with her about the dangers of predators on social networks and also talk about the inappropriate content that was posted.

But I think the bigger issue is that kids emulate what they see in the home and what they are being exposed to. For example, if they see their parents going to church on Sunday and then on the drive home from church listening to lil' wayne on the radio - they will learn not to take what they hear in church seriously. This is a sticky issue, I know. This was an issue even when I was growing up. We sang in the choir, served on the junior usher board, but outside of church (and even sometimes at church) we were involved in some unholy activities. So do we just chalk it up to kids being kids?

Is it unreasonable for me to desire my children to walk in the ways of God? To desirie that they won't want to follow the crowd but be that light in the sea of darkness? That is SO what I desire, but I sometimes feel like I don't have a right to want that since I made so many mistakes when I was growing up. I mean, Jerrold and I are trying to do all the right things. We are attempting to "train them up in the way that they should go" like it says in Proverbs 22:6.

I have been pondering this for a while and I have decided that I am going to take God at His word. I can't be concerned with what everyone else is doing or what other people think. Jerrold and I will hold our kids to a higher standard...we WILL train them in the way that they should go - with no regrets or caveats that "they will do what they want to do anyway" like some people say. We WILL rely on the wisdom of God and His word as a resource and the standard for our kids. It is not unreasonable to expect our kids to trust Jesus as their savior and live for Him, even at their young age.

So pray for us, OK? And those of you that are parents...we will pray for you too.

Thought You Were at Home huh?!

on 7:47 AM

Barbershop

Most people have seen the movie Barbershop right? Well, that movie really rings true in alot of what goes on in a "black" barbershop. The "Husltle Man" coming through selling everything under the sun, the local basketball star stopping through to hang out, the drama between the barbers and their girlfriends/wives, neighborhood dudes just stopping by to chop it up and watch Sports Center, cats arguing about who's better Bron or Kobe, Biggie or Jay, etc. I've been with the same barber for about 7 years now. Although he has moved to what's now his third shop, I've stayed with him and just adjusted with his moves. But that's over.

I went in the shop Friday to get my son's hair cut...but this time I had my two daughter's with me because Maine was at a conference at our church. When I get there, they have the TV on, blasting this video Every Girl, by Lil Wayne and all these other dudes. I'm walking through the shop looking for my son's barber, but while I'm walking, I notice this isn't the "radio edit", this is the uncut version and so is the video! So I immediately find his barber, get my son in the chair, and get my girls outta there. We find some folding chairs and sit outside in th front while my son got cut. (I know what you're thinking, I shouldn't have left my son in there either...huge mistake on my part.) A bit later, my daughter says she needs to use the restroom, so we go in. I guess the video was on repeat or something, because it was still on! So I tell the barber nearest the door to turn it off. Dude is like, "Huh?!" I'm like, turn that off fam, I got my girls with me!! Long story short, that will be my last visit to that shop.

The reality is, I should have stopped going there years ago. "Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life." -Proverbs 4:23 (NIV) Between the language, the choice of movies/videos, the topics of conversation, etc...being who I am (or who I desire to be), I should have stopped patronage of that shop well before I did. Beyond exposing my children to it, I shouldn't have exposed myself to it.

For whatever reason, certain business establishments have forgotten what customer service is. Businesses operate for the satisfaction of it's customers. In order to do that effectively, you first have to respect your customers. Caring about your customers is the next level, but let's just start with respect. I've been to plenty barbershops, urban clothing stores, etc. where the choice of music and conversation is not befitting for a place of business. I can voice my opinion when I find myself in those places, but beyond that, I can take my business elsewhere. C'mon ya'll...let's step it up. I don't care if you own it or if you're just an employee. You're there for the service of your customers. You can't talk however you want and listen to whatever you want while you're at work...what, you thought you were at home huh?!

Are You Covered?

on 4:31 PM

I remember back when I lived in Tallahasse, my family and I attended this Baptist church on Orange Avenue. I donʼt recall the name of it or the Pastor, but I do remember the Sunday morning he brought a message on tithing. At that time, I wasnʼt even saved yet – still doing all-nighters at the club, drinking and smoking...but after I heard that message, I immediately became a tither. His title for his sermon was “Will a Man Rob God?!”

“For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed. Even from the days of your fathers ye are gone away from mine ordinances, and have not kept them. Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the LORD of hosts. But ye said, Wherein shall we return? Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation. Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the LORD of hosts. And all nations shall call you blessed; for ye shall be a delighsome land, saith the LORD of hosts.” Malachi 3:6-12

As it stands right now, there are many people in many churches around the world that will argue that tithing has passed away because it was under the law. When I say under the law, I mean the law of the Old Covenant and that with the coming of Jesus Christ, the law was no more and we were ushered into a time of Godʼs grace. But two very important facts still hold true: Tithing hasnʼt passed away and it isnʼt an option.

What exactly is the Tithe?
Tithing is about putting God first in your life. The tithing law is to give ten percent of oneʼs income back to God, with God being represented on the physical level by the source of oneʼs spiritual teaching. It is a way of renouncing the system of the world - and act of faith that shows that youʼll trust Godʼs Word and not what youʼve learned or been accustomed to. As humankind fulfills its part of the covenant by giving ten percent to God, then God fulfills his part by continually blessing us. Put Him first in your life and you can count on Him doing His part.

People sometimes resist the process of giving their tithe. Interestingly, it doesnʼt belong to you in the first place; you are just restoring it to its rightful owner – God. Instead of trusting in the Lord for their success, they trust in money or riches. Therefore, they withhold their tithes so they can have a lot more they can trust. This happened to the Hebrews, who, instead of being a pleasure to the Lord, sometimes turned to their own pleasures and stopped tithing. It wasnʼt too long before things went awry. When they questioned why, the answer was always that they had broken Godʼs covenant. Then the people would restore the covenant
by tithing; they would start to flourish again, and there would be no war. One of the fundamental errors that we have as human beings is greed, which is manifested mostly in terms of money or monetary value. Greed, by its very nature, is a striking against the riches within oneself because it appears that there is never enough here in the world. Our eyes are always “hungry”, we are always after “more”.

Back when I heard that message “Will a Man Rob God?”, I thought to myself...”How could a man rob God?!”. I mean, what in a man, would tell him that robbing God could be beneficial. Without getting super deep or super spiritual, the Bible says that if you do not tithe and give offerings, you are robbing God. Also, it has to be noted that it doesʼt read “tithes or offerings”...it reads “and”. I vowed to myself from that point on that I would tithe on all legal (gotta add that for some of my "fresh-off-the-block" Saints lol) income that came to me and give offerings as the Spirit within me leads me to. After getting saved and attending a Bible-teaching church reguarly, I have gained knowledge and understanding of the tithe and its operation and function in a Kingdom lifestyle.

“For I am the LORD, I change not therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed. Even from the days of your fathers ye are gone away from mine ordinances, and have not kept them. Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the LORD of hosts. But ye said, Wherein shall we return?” v. 6,7

They had been murmering against God, because they did not see his help, which in actuality, had been ever present to defend them. Therefore, God accuses them of being ungrateful, and shows that they are not daily consumed. It was a sign that He still defends them, and so his mercy towards them never changes. Then He goes on to say that they havenʼt been following the laws that have been placed before them, laws that go back to their fathersʼ days. He tells them to return
to Him by returning to these ways that they were instructed to follow. This applies to us even today. Godʼs people want to “blame” Him for not being there when we face troubling times, but He has to constantly show us in one way or another that Heʼs always there. And He wants us also to return to Him, return to the ordinances that He has set for us in His Word.

“Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation. Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation.” v. 8,9

God considers it robbery to not come to Him with tithes and offerings. The thing about the tithe is that it is God-given and like I stated earlier, paying of the tithe is just returning to God what belongs to Him. Itʼs taking something that has been dedicated to God, which cuts off a system which was set in place to bless His people. He also goes on to say that you shall be cursed because this total wrong has been done to him. Deuteronomy 28 teaches on the blessings and the curses that are activated when the commandments of God are either followed or not...and youʼll notice the list of curses is much longer than that of the blessings.

“Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.” v. 10

PROVE ME NOW...God is telling us to test him! See if the system that He has put into place wonʼt put us, His people, in a better position. Heʼs saying here that through the tithe, He will open the windows of heaven and pour, not sprinkle, pour out a blessing that there insʼt room enough to receive it! Thatʼs BIG! It's not about money falling out the sky, random checks coming in the mail or any of that hocus pocus. It's about God providing new opportunities, business ventures, unexpected favor, etc.

“And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the LORD of hosts. And all nations shall call you blessed; for ye shall be a delighsome land, saith the LORD of hosts.” v. 11,12

This is the best part to me. He tells us here, that He will keep satan off our backs for participating in the giving of the tithe and offerings. In the scripture, God is referring to whatever can attack and destroy the labor of our hands or bodies. Yes, we'll face hardships, we'll have hard situations to withstand (and eventually overcome) and other challenges in life. But even with that said, satan canʼt come in and destroy our finances, our children, our property, etc., these things are protected because of the tithe. The tithe becomes like insurance of the Kingdom. Are you covered?

Cheaters Never Win

on 8:29 PM

Each day I spend about 2 hours commuting to and from work. Most of the time I'm in back to back traffic. Over the last eight years that I've lived in the Chicagoland area I've come to learn that there are a lot of cheaters on the road. I don't like cheaters. I know, I know, you're wondering what in the heck I'm talking about. I know you've seen them (and maybe you're one of them). They're the people who think that wherever they're going is the most important place on the earth - and they will disregard all common courtesy on the road trying to get there.

I think I'm really obsessed with these cheaters though, I mean really. For example, there's this exit ramp to get to 290 going west from the Dan Ryan expressway in Chicago. There are two lanes - one to go to 290W and another to go downtown to the loop. Every time I have to use this exit I get all hot and bothered. I wait at the end of the line in the lane to get onto 290W very patiently - this lane is always so slow and VERY long. Meanwhile, I see a million and one cheaters use the right lane the loop to skip in front of everyone. This really gets me upset! For the life of me I can't understand why these people think it's alright to cheat their way to the front of the line...and they don't even realize that the reason the line is so long is because of them cutting in!!! I will admit that I NEVER let cheaters merge in the lane in front of me. I do everything humanly possible to keep them from cutting in front of me (take that cheating somewhere else man!) I also remember their make and model of car and purposely drive up next to them when we finally get onto 290W to look them in their face and mouth "CHEATER" to them....yes I do...I said I was a bit obsessed now!!

Photobucket

I always wonder what's going through someone's mind when they do something rude on the road. It's such an impersonal interaction - since they cut in line on the road would they also cut in line at the store??? I think not. That's a much more personal interaction...you're right in their face. Have you ever noticed that when someone does something rude to you on the road they won't look you in the face if you drive up next to them? They act like they don't see you there (it is sometimes pretty funny how hard people try to ignore you after they've just cut you off or blocked you from merging or something). I think they're embarrassed that they acted so rudely and don't have the guts to own up to it. What about getting behind the wheel makes people so inconsiderate? We're all out here trying to get somewhere, so the golden rule should apply on the road too.

So what about you...are you a cheater on the road? I hope not.....

Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story

on 10:03 PM

A frustrated young boy with problems in school overcomes the obstacles in his life to become a world-renowned neurosurgeon. This uplifting and inspirational film stars Oscar® winner Cuba Gooding Jr. and two-time NAACP Image Award winner Kimberly Elise. It is based on the true story of Dr. Benjamin S. Carson, whose lifelong journey led him to become director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center, a best-selling author and a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Check out the movie poster!

Gifted Hands

(Courtesy of http://www.tnt.tv/movies/giftedhands)

It was Maine's turn to choose the movie for our date night, and this is the one she chose. I was expecting some mushy, chick-flick, but was very pleasantly surprised. There was alot that I took from this film that might need to be a must-see for parents. It was very inspirational, faith-filled story of a young man's jourey through life.

1.) The mother, played by Kimberly Elise, was a 3rd grade educated, illiterate cleaning woman. Wow...that's a mouthful, but that was her background. She ended up alone raising her two boys. But she had very high hopes for her sons and spoke greatness to them regularly. She told them the power of their minds, their imagination and that they could accomplish anything they wanted, as long as they were willing to put in the work to get it.

2.) The boys were often distracted by television, spending hours at a time watching it... She came in from work one day, turned the television off and proceeded to let them know they watch too much, and instead, they can only watch two programs...per week! The extra time would be spent at the library and they were responsible for reading two books per week and then writing an essay about the books. (It wasn't until after the movie that Maine and I were discussing the movie, that I remembered that she couldn't even read!!)

There are many other very inspiring facets to this film, but these two really stuck out to me. Now, of course, I know it's a movie...made to invoke an emotional response, but real is real. There is nothing like the power of vision and that's exactly what this film was about. The only thing stopping us from achieving everything that God has for us...is us.

Driver

Anybody who knows me, knows that I am an avid sports fan. Well...not so much "sports," because I really only follow two: Basketball and Football. As far as basketball, I really don't have any loyalty to any specific team as much as I follow players I like. (For the record, this is the Age of Kobe, so no need to wonder who I'm riding with.) Now football...there's only one team for me! I bleed green and gold baby, Green Bay Packers til Jesus comes back!!

So I'm watching the Packer game today, but I made the mistake of watching it while laying in the bed. Needless to say, I feel asleep. (And please don't question my fanhood because I fell asleep on my team...tired is as tired does.) I wake up, the Bears game is on and Icheck the scores that scroll the bottom of the screen. Couldn't believe what I was seing. THE PACKERS LOST TO THE BENGALS...AT LAMBEAU?! I mean, who loses to the Bengals?! I should have known it was gone end up that way when Ochocinco (Chad Johnson) did the Lambeau Leap and wasn't tossed back to the field as he should have been... So I see some other scores from around the league and was just as flabergasted with those results. The Patriots lost to the Jets?! Word?! I mean, it's the new look Jets and all...Sanchez and what not...but hold up, we're talking Brady to Moss right?!

So sarcastically, I post to twitter: "Ok...what's really goin on?! I wake up and find my @packers lost to Cinnci?! AND New England lost to the Jets?! Guess the Bears gone win too." Needless to say, the Urlacher-less Bears beat the Super Bowl defending Champ Steelers... Wow, that's why I love this game! Any Given Sunday...

The Vendor/Client Relationship...in Real World Situations

on 8:22 PM

As a graphic designer that has dealth with a very wide range of clients, this video is humorous, but rings so true in its message. Designers deal with so many types of scenarios, but nine times out of ten, the most common one is a lack of funds or the client who doesn't know what they want, or they'll know it when they see it! Aggggghhh!! And don't even get me started on the "chuch folk". Frustrating is an understatement.

Entering a New World

Mr. & Mrs. Daniels

What's good my people!

Ok, not exactly sure how this whole thing is going to play out, but here we are! My wife and I always have these provacative conversations about things and we'd like to hear other's opinions and input on those matters, but between Facebook and Twitter, we still weren't having the types of conversations we'd like. So Maine (what I'll be referring to my wife as from this day forward…and that's only a name for me to call her!) came up with the idea of starting a blog. With that, my love for music and loving to share new finds with anyone who shares my love (or will take the time to listen or watch), my affinity for sports (really only basketball and football!), my passion for just about anything design (a professional graphic designer and ex-architecture student), and fashion… My wife's love of family, her expertise in the area of Financial Literacy (with emphasis in higher education), her attraction to all things HGTV (interior design, landscaping, real estate sales and acquisition) …we figured a blog would be a great forum for everything Daniels!

But the one thing we plan to share through this blog, the one constant in everything we are and will be, is our faith in and love for the Lord Jesus Christ. Most of our concerns about the destruction of the family structure, the influence of urban music on our youth, lack of heroes and true role models in our communities–we've found–all boils down to the absense of a true fear and reverential respect of the Lord God.

So with all that said...let's see how this thing unfolds!!
